About Fall Men's Retreat
October 25 – 27, 2019 - Avalon, NJ
The men of First Presbyterian Church are headed to the shore for a weekend of spiritual renewal, friendship-building with an opportunity to serve God. We’ll be staying in two lovely homes, one in Avalon and other in Stone Harbor (with a bed for everyone!). Come and give a gift to yourself that will bless you as you return to your home and work.
Our Weekend’s Theme: Living New.
'This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!' 2 Corinthians 5:17, New Living Translation
The promise given by Jesus to those who trust and follow Him is that He’ll bring a fullness of life. Paul calls it the beginning of a new life as we become new people. Said differently, we are “converted” into newness. Author Scot McKnight puts it this way, “Conversion is more than an event; it is a process. Like wisdom, it takes a lifetime. Conversion is a lifelong series of gentle (or noisy) nods of the soul. The question of when someone is converted is much less important than that they are converting.” (from The Jesus Creed)
Our Guest Speakers:
We’ll be joined by three special guys who follow Jesus seriously but joyously. Greg Porter, founder and Director of the Daniel Foundation; John King, Presbyterian Church USA Pastor, currently serving as Interim Pastor at the Olivet Covenant Church; and Bruce Carter, founding Pastor of the Valley View Church near Valley Forge. All three men have been married a long time, raised families and have served Christ faithfully. You’ll get a chance to hear their stories of conversion—how Christ changed them and how He continues to change them. Over the course of our weekend, we’ll have opportunities to learn, share and pray together.
We’re Leaving the Building:
This last weekend in October is when FPCM plans a day of mission called The Church Has Left the Building. We’re going to have our own version of that on Saturday afternoon. We’re planning to go and serve the Lord in those communities around Avalon.
The retreat begins with dinner on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Appetizers begin at 6:30 p.m. The retreat concludes on Sunday morning following worship. You’ll be home by noon. The cost of the retreat is $150. Scholarships are available. See Stuart Spencer. Friends are most welcome as are sons who are college-age or older. Car-pooling can be arranged.
